Family Bonds Woven Through Generations

If you have ever visited Wilmot Auto Service, you have probably met one of the Garwoods.

Harmon S. Garwood would be the one that started the business back in 1951. Harm and Kathryn had six children. In 1951 the Wilmot Gas Station came up for sale for $3,500, and he bought it on a land contract for $1.00 down. His wife Kathryn cried when she saw it. She was not ready to own a gas station and auto repair shop.

At first, they sold gas for 26.5 cents per gallon. Then they started the auto repair business. In 1961, Harm bought the corner of Hwy C and Hwy W and built the new Wilmot Auto Service. The old Wilmot Garage is now Linda’s Wilmot Café.

Tom's sons, Harm T. and Dwayne, got started at an early age. Tom recalls, the boys were one and two when he bought Silver Lake Auto Service in 1971. Silver Lake Auto is now owned by Harm T. Garwood.

When Harm S. retired in 1989, Tom took over Wilmot Auto Service. In 1989-1990, Tom built the convenience store and redesigned the service station.

In 2005, Tom’s second son, Dwayne, took over the management position at Wilmot Auto Service.
